VA Funding Fee Refund: How to Get Yours Back in 2026
Rated 10% or more after closing? If your VA compensation's effective date predates your closing, you may be owed the funding fee back. How to claim it in 2026.

Exempt from the VA funding fee?
Veterans entitled to VA disability compensation generally don't pay it. Check your eligibility in 2 minutes.
Check my eligibilityIf VA awarded you disability compensation with an effective date that falls before the day your loan closed, the funding fee you paid wasn't actually owed — and you can claim it back. A VA funding fee refund isn't a courtesy credit. Since July 1, 2019, VA pays the money directly to the veteran, even when the fee was rolled into the loan. On a typical $350,000 first-use purchase, that's $7,525 back in your pocket.
Refund or exemption? Know which one you're claiming
These are two different claims, and mixing them up wastes weeks. The funding fee exemption means you never pay the fee at closing. The refund is for veterans who already paid it and shouldn't have.
| Funding fee exemption | Funding fee refund | |
|---|---|---|
| When it applies | Before closing | After closing |
| Who it's for | Veterans receiving (or entitled to receive) disability compensation, active-duty Purple Heart recipients, DIC surviving spouses | Veterans whose rating came through later, with a retroactive effective date |
| What happens | Fee never charged; status shows on your COE | VA pays back the fee you already paid |
| Where to start | Your lender confirms it on the Certificate of Eligibility | Your servicer, or a VA Regional Loan Center |
Who qualifies for a VA funding fee refund
VA's loan fees page frames eligibility as three conditions that usually travel together:
- You had a disability compensation claim pending when your loan closed (this is the typical path — you closed while VA was still deciding).
- VA later awarded you compensation for a service-connected disability.
- The effective date of that compensation is retroactive to a date before your loan closed.
There is no separate minimum rating for the refund. The question is whether VA pays you compensation, and VA's compensation rates start at a 10% rating — so a 10% rating that came through after you closed can qualify, as long as its effective date reaches back before closing day.
The third condition is the one that decides claims. VA disability ratings are generally effective from the date VA received your claim — not the date the decision letter arrives. So a veteran who filed a claim in March, closed on a house in June, and got a 30% rating in November has an effective date that predates closing. That veteran was exempt all along and is owed the full fee back, per VA's funding fee rules: the effective date "must be retroactive to before the date of your loan closing."
One situation VA is explicit does not qualify: a proposed or memorandum rating issued after closing. Service members going through pre-discharge claims can be exempted at closing if the rating exists in time — but if it arrives after closing, there's no refund on that basis.
Find your two dates
Everything turns on two documents: the effective date on your VA rating decision letter and the closing date on your Closing Disclosure. If the first comes before the second, you have a claim. Pull both before you make a single phone call.
What your refund is worth
The refund equals the fee you actually paid, and the fee is a percentage of the loan amount. Here's what that looks like on a $350,000 loan under the rates in effect for 2026:
| Option | Amount | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| IRRRL refinance · 0.5% fee | $1,750 | Smallest fee, still worth claiming |
| First use · $0 down · 2.15% | $7,525 | The most common refund scenario |
| Subsequent use · $0 down · 3.3% | $11,550 | The biggest fee on the schedule |
Paid directly to you by VA up to $11,550 (on a $350,000 subsequent-use loan — a check to you, not a credit buried in your balance)
A first-use, $0-down purchase carries a 2.15% fee; using the benefit a second time with nothing down costs 3.3%; an IRRRL streamline refinance charges 0.5%. Down payments of 5% or more shrink the purchase fee to 1.5%, and 10% or more to 1.25%. Run your own loan amount through the funding fee calculator to see what you paid — or check every rate — purchase, cash-out, IRRRL, NADL, assumption — in our 2026 VA funding fee chart.
There's a second-order cost, too. Most veterans finance the fee into the loan, which means a $7,525 fee has been quietly accruing interest since closing day. The refund covers the fee itself, so the sooner you claim it, the less interest you'll have paid on money you never owed.

Rated 10% or higher?
A VA specialist can confirm your exemption before your next loan — so there's no fee to chase back later.
Check my eligibilityHow to claim your refund, step by step
1. Confirm the dates. Compare the effective date on your rating decision with your closing date. Gather the rating decision letter, your Closing Disclosure, and a current mortgage statement.
2. Contact your loan servicer. Servicers handle these through VA's Funding Fee Payment System. VA's current guidance to lenders says lenders and servicers "should initiate corrections and requests for a refund" there and upload supporting documentation such as the Closing Disclosure — so ask your servicer to confirm the request has actually been opened.
3. Or go straight to VA. Call a Regional Loan Center at 877-827-3702 (TTY: 711), Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET. This is VA's own instruction for refund questions, and it's the right move if your loan has been sold or your servicer is slow.
4. VA pays you directly. Since July 1, 2019, VA pays the refund to the veteran, "regardless of the loan balance." You'll get the money even if the fee was financed.
Financed the fee? Consider sending the refund to principal
The refund check doesn't automatically shrink your loan balance — the financed fee is still in there. VA itself notes that veterans may want to forward the refund to their servicer as a principal payment. On a young 30-year loan, knocking $7,525 off the balance saves interest every month for decades.
VA doesn't publish a standard timeline for how long the payment takes. If weeks pass with no movement, call the Regional Loan Center again and ask for the status of your funding fee correction request.
If your loan closed years ago, check anyway
This isn't a rare paperwork edge case. A 2019 VA Office of Inspector General review estimated that VA charged about 72,900 exempt veterans roughly $286.4 million in funding fees between 2012 and 2017. The review estimated VA still owed about 53,200 of them refunds totaling $189 million. The fallout forced VA to overhaul how it flags exempt borrowers, and it's the backdrop for the current rule that VA pays refunds directly to the veteran.
If you closed on a VA loan years ago and a disability rating with a retroactive effective date came through at any point, make the call. The worst outcome is a "no"; the best is five figures.
Bottom line
A VA funding fee refund comes down to one comparison: the effective date of your disability compensation against your loan's closing date. If the rating reaches back past closing, VA owes you the fee (2.15% to 3.3% of your loan) and pays it to you directly. Start with your servicer, escalate to 877-827-3702, and don't let a years-old closing date talk you out of checking.

Frequently asked
How do I request a VA funding fee refund?
Contact your loan servicer, or call a VA Regional Loan Center at 877-827-3702 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET. Have your rating decision letter, Closing Disclosure, and a current mortgage statement ready. The effective date on the rating decision settles eligibility.
Who qualifies for a VA funding fee refund?
Veterans who paid the funding fee and were later awarded VA disability compensation with an effective date retroactive to before their loan's closing date. The typical case: your disability claim was pending when you closed, the award came through afterward, and the effective date reaches back past closing day.
Do I need a 10% disability rating to get a funding fee refund?
VA's test is compensation, not a rating number. You may be eligible if VA later awards you compensation for a service-connected disability with an effective date before your loan closed, typically on a claim that was pending when you closed. In practice that usually means a rating of 10% or higher, because VA's monthly compensation rates start at 10%. The effective date matters as much as the rating: if it falls on or after your closing date, that award won't earn a refund.
Does the refund go to me or to my loan balance?
To you. As of July 1, 2019, VA pays funding fee refunds directly to the veteran, regardless of the loan balance — even if you financed the fee into the loan. Before that date, refunds on financed fees were applied to the loan balance instead.
How long does a VA funding fee refund take?
VA doesn't publish a standard processing timeline. Its current guidance to lenders (Circular 26-23-19, October 2023) has servicers start refund requests in VA's Funding Fee Payment System, with supporting documents such as the Closing Disclosure, and VA then issues the refund directly to you. If your request stalls, follow up with the Regional Loan Center at 877-827-3702.
My disability rating came through after closing. Do I still qualify?
It depends on the effective date, not the decision date. A rating awarded months after closing still qualifies if its effective date falls before your closing date. The exception is service members with a proposed or memorandum rating issued after closing — VA says that scenario is not eligible for a refund.
