VA Disability Rating

What's your combined VA disability rating — and what does it pay?

VA ratings aren't additive. Enter each rating and we'll run the VA's combined-rating formula, show your 2026 monthly compensation, and flag the home-loan funding fee your rating waives.

Your ratings

Enter each service-connected rating separately. The VA doesn't add them — it combines them with a formula, so 50% + 30% is not 80%.

Your combined VA rating

70%

Estimated monthly compensation: $1,961.45/mo

About $23,537 per year, tax-free. Effective Dec 1, 2025 rates.

A 10%+ rating waives your VA funding fee — for life.

With a service-connected rating of 10% or higher you pay no VA funding fee on a home loan. On a $350,000 purchase that's about $7,525 you keep — first use or every use after.

More on the waiver in our funding-fee exemption guide and the funding fee calculator.

How the VA combines ratings

Each rating applies only to the whole-body ability left after the higher ones. The combined figure is then rounded to the nearest 10%. That's why stacking ratings gives you less than the simple sum — and why the last few points to 100% are the hardest to reach.

Frequently asked

How does the VA combine multiple disability ratings?

The VA doesn't add ratings together. It applies each rating to the whole-body ability that remains after the higher ratings, then rounds the result to the nearest 10%. A 50% and a 30% rating combine to 65%, which rounds to 70% — not 80%. This calculator runs that exact formula.

What is the bilateral factor?

When service-connected disabilities affect both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, the VA combines those ratings first and then adds an extra 10% of that subtotal before combining with your other conditions. Check the 'paired limb' box on each qualifying rating and the calculator applies it.

Does a VA disability rating waive the VA home loan funding fee?

Yes. A service-connected disability rating of 10% or higher exempts you from the VA funding fee on a home loan — first use and every subsequent use. On a typical purchase that saves several thousand dollars. Surviving spouses receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and active-duty Purple Heart recipients are also exempt.

Are these the current 2026 VA disability pay rates?

Yes. These are the rates effective December 1, 2025, which carry through 2026 until the next cost-of-living adjustment. VA disability compensation is tax-free and not counted as income. Amounts are transcribed directly from the VA's published rate tables.
